It really doesn't make the difference anymore apple/pc. I am a PC guy trapped in a audio world surrounded by Apple products. Other advantage of a mac os in general is that you can use Logic which is a natural upgrade path from garageband, if you are starting there. Plus it will have thunderbolt which opens a lot of new audio interfaces to you if/when you decide to upgrade from the scarlett. I think its also easier to upgrade memory on the imac and in my experience you need at least 16 GB to run pro tools well if tracking a live band and/or using mix of samples and audio. New is better, and in one package it has everything you need so no dealing with monitors, keyboards, mouse, etc. I'm also primarily a pc guy who uses mac for audio production. Some fundamental differences: - no need to optimise your Mac for audio in any way - no need to install antivirus SW (the disadvantages currently outweigh the advantages) - it's a good idea to always stay on current releases of the OS, not on older ones. Are some good tutorials on how to get started when you come from PCs. I'd personally get a new iMac, rather than a 2nd hand Mac mini - newer machines will last longer, and be compatible with OS X updates further into the future. In terms of power, both are sufficient for audio recording, and GarageBand is included on any new Mac, which is a great start for getting into DAWs. Your Focusrite interface will run without installing any driver on either Mac. With the power of ProTools First, PreSonus Studio One Artist, GarageBand, and a collection of top-brand compressors, equalizers, mastering plugins, and modeling software, including. The Complete Desktop Recording Studio with Mac Mini provides all the hardware and software you need to write, compose and record your music from start to finish. Logic is a well liked and comprehensive program but like all DAWs, the more plugins and more VSTi's the more ram is required. The biggest limitation here for a long haul computer is the lack of support for higher amounts of ram or the newest processors. The specs on the Mac Mini are not too bad.
